The residence status that allows a foreign national married to a Japanese citizen to live in Japan is "Spouse or Child of Japanese National." It is commonly called a "spouse visa" or "marriage visa." It has no work restrictions, so you can take any kind of job.
Being married does not mean the visa is granted automatically. Immigration mainly reviews whether the marriage is genuine and whether the couple can live in Japan in a stable way. The key to approval is to convey the reality of your relationship carefully through the questionnaire, the account of how your relationship developed, and documents about your income.
Three Types of Spouse Visa Procedures
Certificate of Eligibility (COE) application: the procedure for bringing a spouse who lives abroad to Japan. With the issued certificate, your spouse obtains a visa at a Japanese embassy or consulate and travels to Japan.
Change of status application: the procedure for someone already living in Japan on a student or work visa, for example, to switch to a spouse visa. A change from Temporary Visitor status is not permitted as a rule, but it may be possible depending on the circumstances.
Extension of period of stay application: the procedure for extending a spouse visa. Additional explanation is needed if there has been a job change, a change in income, or a change of spouse.
